저는 한국관의 존재를 알기 전에 거의 1년에 5번 이상 이곳을 방문했습니다. 지금도 방문하고 있고요. 당시만 해도 저는 이 한국관의 존재를 전혀 몰랐습니다. 그때는 이 파크 자체도 잘 정돈되지 않았고, 이곳이 크고 작은 나무들로 많이 가려져 있었거든요. 나무 사이에 뭔가가 있을 거라는 생각은 했지만, 건물이 있을 거라는 생각조차 하지 못했거든요. 제가 이 협회에서 활동하기 전에 한국관의 존재를 알고서 정말 보고 싶어서 일부러 찾아온 적이 있어요. 사실 그때도 지금 상태와 비슷했던 것 같아요. 단지 그때는 가림막이 되어 있었고, 지금처럼 주변이 예쁘게 정돈되어 있지 않고 가려진 부분이 많았어요. 건물 자체는 지금처럼 방치되어 있었고, 지붕 등이 많이 훼손되어 있었죠.
처음에 제가 느낀 감정은 한국의 전통 형태를 가진 건물이 몬트리올에 있다는 데 우선은 굉장히 반가웠고 감격스럽기까지 했어요. 그러나 제 감정과 달리 건물의 상태는 너무 안 좋고, 주변도 슬픈 분위기였죠. 솔직히 너무 안타까웠어요. 그런 안타까움은 사실 제가 살면서 처음 겪어본 안타까움이었어요. 그래서 이게 정말 복원돼야 한다는 생각이 한인 건축사로서 강하게 일어났고, 지금까지도 그 생각에는 변함이 없어요. 협회에서 계속 활동하는 데 그런 마음이 강하게 작용했다고 생각합니다.
Before I knew about the existence of the Korean Pavilion, I visited this place more than five times a year. I still visit it now. Back then, I had no idea the Korean Pavilion was here. The park itself wasn’t well maintained at that time, and it was heavily covered by large and small trees. I suspected there was something hidden among the trees, but I never imagined there was an actual building. Before I started working with the association, once I found out about the Korean Pavilion, I made a special effort to come see it. Honestly, it looked pretty much the same as it does now. Back then, it was surrounded by barriers and the surrounding area wasn’t as neatly maintained; many parts were still obscured. The building itself was neglected, and the roof was heavily damaged. When I first saw it, I felt a strong sense of joy and even awe that a building with traditional Korean architectural form existed here in Montreal. However, contrary to my emotions, the condition of the building was very poor, and the atmosphere around it was quite sad. To be honest, it was a kind of sadness I had never experienced before. As a Korean architect, that feeling made me strongly believe that this pavilion must be restored. That conviction has not changed since then, and I believe it has been a major driving force behind my continued involvement in the association.
